How this taper managed to smuggle his Mini-DV into the venue & pull out such a professional recording boggles my mind. No one is in front of the camera, no one is yelling & the recording is pretty-much focused simply on Tool. The taper is in a good location, almost dead-center. This performance featured the "new" artwork that Tool was using by artist Alex Gray, who was at this show as well. The camera is focused; excellent shots of the band, the 'new artwork' & video shots. Sound is great, better than some MD versions I've heard of various shows. If There were some people who described this performance as something short of the 2nd-coming-of-what-Christians-call-Christ.

Notes: This is definitely a better sounding source than the MD recording. Nice, warm DAT sound. The recording is bass-heavy on the first few songs, but the taper adjusts the levels appropriately by the 4th, and gets a very good sound. This one picks up on a nice collective crowd sing-along to most all songs. It's a very cool thing to hear this happen when it is caught well (ie. when the crowd is a mass chanting/singing roar in the background, and not an out-of-tune jackass sing-screaming right next to the mics). This happens on many songs. However, with the good comes the bad. The NY crowd was -obnoxious- this night. At Radio City of all places. Stupid girls screaming their head off; meatheads yell-cussing for no reason; and just a lot of talking in general. This was caught on both recordings. Really disappointing. As mentioned in the the review for Version A, Tool is certainly on for this show. You'll want to have a copy of this. But again, this isn't near what was performed at MSG a year before. Tech Notes: - The recording was tracked very oddly (broken down below): Splitting up the Grudge and Lateralus, but including The Patient, Aenema, and Intermission all on 1 track. - There are copies of this show floating around with a large 6-second skip in the beginning of Disposition, and various other glitches/skips spread throughout. I don't know how these got there, but they shouldn't be there, and nor should anybody be spreading them around. This copy is from the master, & glitch-free.

Notes: A landmark show (?) - Tool at Radio City. The recording: well, hmmm. Not the greatest, but there is a reason. Apparently the taper had an aisle seat, unfortunately positioned directly next to some pesky security (the entire show), so he had to place the mics under the seat to keep them properly hidden. Kudos for getting the job done, and getting the recording, in its entirety. And damn, it's really not that bad for mics being underneath a seat. However, the sound is a bit distant, the crisp highs are lost, the overall range of dynamics are reduced considerably, and worst of all, the mics pick up quite a bit of annoying crowd talking and yelling directly around them. The performance: Tool are sharp here. The Grudge and Triad are probably the highlights. But honestly, I couldn't help to be disappointed. IMO, this is a far cry from their similar landmark performances in NY a year ago at the Garden. Those 2 shows (10.1.01 & 10.2.01) particularly the second, were about as close to musical nirvana as you can get. This is to say nothing of the two sold out Roseland performances in '96, which for them back then, were somewhat of a landmark. These could be considered even better than all three of the Lateralus shows. There is just an energy lacking here. The show moves sluggishly. Perhaps it's an effect of the recording, but I'm doubting it, - even if others sources surface.
