The second of two sold-out Academy gigs also provides evidence of the band's astounding popularity. A frighteningly young and desparately trendy audience had come to worship the foursome's challenging, dark and twisted sounds. Tool work hard to retain their mystique: so dimly lit is the stage, that you must strain to see anything: the music is mostly accompanied by surreal photo montages that drift in and out of focus in time with Adam Jones's lumbering, sometimes Led Zeppelin-like riffs. We get supernovas and even toilet bowls, and the animation is so effective that the tunes without promos become anti-climactic. The use of the visuals must render any kind of spontaneity impossible, but Tool require no encouragement to elongate their songs - most last for seven or eight minutes, taking in manic, distorted themes, or haunting, cacophonic sounds. The one constant is Maynard James Keenan. Bent double and staring off into space as he hollers out is beguiling mantra's, he's as fascinating to watch as the band are to listen to. Apart from "Hello London", the shaven-headed frontman appears utterly oblivious to the audience until the show's climax. Even when he does say something, he seems forlorn, almost bitter that it has taken Tool a decade to reach this plateau. How curious that the media-shy guy should give the opinion: "It's all down to communication. That's why we are still here and our peers are not." Despite what anyone else may tell you, Tool are neither utterly original nor always listenable. But no doubt they will settle for being both engaging and almost always compelling. ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- This recording is clear, bit distant but very enjoyable. It shows signs of noise reduction so isn't untampered with. Personally I don't have much tolerance regarding the artifacts of noise reduction, especially when it's overdone, but found this very enjoyable to listen to. Judge for yourselves. The demos are a nice bonus. Enjoy the music, do share but preserve quality! Bert

Audience shot from balcony, some wobbles and occasionally has the balcony bar at the bottom of the screen but apart from that not many obstructions. Picture quite dark and has a slight grain to it. Some great shots mostly of Maynard. Sound very good. This is a lot better than the DVD shot of the night before. Length: 1.57.12 Overall: B Photobucket Photobucket Photobucket

Notes: Clear, very clear, but a ton of bass, making it a B+, yes it overwhelms the voice that much. But its so clear its very much worth having, performance is great. No real surprises in the setlist.
