Notes: (42:00) A great early Kiss recording - 9 tracks - recorded before they had really hit the big time. 1. Deuce 2. Strutter 3. 4. Firehouse 5. Nothing To Lose 6. Cold Gin 7. 100,000 Years 8. Black Diamond 9. Let Me Go Rock n' Roll The sound quality for the first 45 seconds is not very good (I don't think it's a problem with the recording itself, I think the soundman at the concert just didn't have things properly adjusted at the beginning of the show). After that it's solid - very clear soundboard. The musicianship is very tight (the members of Kiss aren't exactly known for their musicianship - so this was a pleasant surprise). Back in the early 70s, doing well the first time you played Detroit was like doing well at the Apollo Theate in NYC - you know the band had to be under some pressure to make a good showing - and they pulled it off. Instead of the siren we're used to hearing (on 1975's "Kiss Alive") at the end of "Firehouse," you hear Peter Criss banging on a cowbell and Ace Frehley flipping the pickup selection toggle switch on his Les Paul - it sounds pretty bush league in comparison. There is an album flip between tracks 6 and 7. "Cold Gin" ends by fading out before the end of the song (it's probably almost at the end of the track). There are only one or two in-between track sound edits - for the most part, this is a continuous recording. Prior to coming out for the encore the stage announcer refers to the band several times as "The Kiss." Obviously, they hadn't quite made the big time yet. Just as the band is taking the stage for its encore and Gene Simmons start talking, some guy (an on-location radio show host perhaps) says, "Well... Oh my goodness." He seems a little surprised about something (Gene's makeup maybe??). This recording is an absolute must for any fan of early Kiss.

Notes: Here's Kiss, proving that they had something straight out of the box. This show is taken from a time before they became the "hottest band in the world" and includes all manner of tunes that would become career spanning staples.
