Notes: The FInal Lunacy" (Hogweeds remaster) - converts to 2 audio discs (TRT 1:22:56) Source: 2nd generation copy to BASF single track mono reel to reel @ 3 3/4 ips from the collection of Bernard White • Created master file. All processing at 32 bit in RX8 adv, unless otherwise noted. • Removed loud whistle at 16kHz - probably inaudible to most folks, but it puts additional demands on your hifi system and your dog would run from the room. This whistle is present on all versions I’ve auditioned. • Removed 50Hz hum plus harmonics. • Drastic eq curve to lift the muffled treble content to levels compatible with the midrange content - 2 high shelf steps @ 2.5kHz and 4kHz, resulting in a total of +18dB boost above 5kHz. That is a whopping amount, and needless to say, resulted in a wall of hiss. • Noise shaping was then applied equally drastically to return hiss levels to a moderate level, while preserving as much of the musical top end as possible. Surprisingly, this exposed detail to nearly 10kHz. It also revealed a host of problems previously hidden… • Meticulous repair of tape degradation issues: gazillions of both micro and macro dropouts, bumps, clicks, plus other extraneous sounds, such as high frequency tape squeal (tape degradation / oxidisation) and odd squeaking tones here and there. • Section by section final balance of the higher frequencies, including fine-tuning of noise shaping. • Section by section improvement of bass frequencies. This was not done using a simple boost, but by enhancing tonality of bass guitar and organ, adding punch to the drums, or both. • Applied a conservative amount of stereo processing to the mono audio, as the ear can’t easily make sense of pure mono information. This was not done by primitive, frequency band splitting techniques, but Ozone’s stereoize algorithm, which creates a stereo field from mono audio using time delays that approximate reverberation, very appropriate for this recording made in the famously echoey space of the Royal Albert Hall. • Minor flutter removal where it was noticeable, such as the organ during Celestial Voices. • Pitch adjustment. The tape speeds up (or master tape slowed during recording), from 40 cents sharp early on to 70 cents sharp from halfway, remaining stable thereafter. Adjustment linked pitch and time, adding nearly 3 mins to the total duration. • Crossfaded applause sections for continuity, plus in/out fades. • Final master to -0.6dB, track and export to flac; 44.1kHz, @ 16 / 24bit.

Notes: For months I have been looking for a decent version of this show and finally, I found. The London Royal Albert Hall release offers a good sound for this concert but still in an incomplete form (missing beginning of "The Man"). It definitely comes from a low generation. One of the strongest Floyd performances also... of course the sound is nothing close to a soundboard recording but compared to other tapes I've heard of this show, this is it. Doesn't have the terrible ATRAC compression of the MiniDisc version. I received it in two separated parts in SHN format, and it had clicks on every change track so i removed them using Adobe Audition 1.0. Another thing, I think the guy who gave me this told me that it already had a bit of NR, but I didn't do anything more to this so it sounds exactly as I got it (except for the clicks, obviously). Note by r.castley (14 May 2005): This still has some SBE in places.
