Notes: Acapulcogold: While this recording isn't as stellar, or as complete as the 4th tape source, this is a pretty good recording, a little heavy on the bass, but otherwise quite enjoyable. It's sadly incomplete, missing quite a bit of the performance, but even with all the missing material, this source is the 2nd most complete tape recording of this show that's available, the most complete tape source is source 4. I recieved this show on a DVD-R, and the audio was one whole file, so I had to run the show through Goldwave to split the show into proper tracks before posting. I haven't done any remastering to this recording at all.
Edgar H (4/5) / 6 View   "The Baron" (A Group/Personal Project)
Notes: Raw and Remastered versions of the 4th and 2nd tape sources. Acapulcogold: The last show of the bands 1st European tour, this is another great performance by the group, but unlike other shows from this tour where they're a little more fierce, this concert is a little looser, and more laid back. This show is definitely an excellent way to close out that tour, the band is good form, they do a lot of experimentation on stage, and they seem to be in good spirits. I think this show deserves more attention and respect than what I think it gets, a boot label hasn't picked up this show up and given it a remaster treatment, or have tried to breathe new life into it since Wardour/Reel Masters released their versions in the 90's, so we wanted to try our hands at trying to breathe new life into this tape. An interesting moment happens after the band wraps up "Moby Dick", as Plant is trying to get the audience to applaud for Bonham after he finishes, he says to the audience "36 minutes of tape, John Bonham", which makes me wonder if he's referring to bootleggers in the audience, or if he knows that there are bootleggers in the audience. I think it might be a bootleg reference, I recall in an interview with Peter Grant on the BBC radio documentary "For One Night Illegally" that the group had run into quite a few people trying to tape in Germany, Grant stated that they caught people in the crowd taping right out in the open, with mics taped to the end of broom sticks trying to capture the best sound possible. For those that may not know, there are 4 tape sources of this recording in circulation, 3 are incomplete fragments of the concert, and one is the complete performance. The recording that's been used for our main tape is what I've always known to be the 4th tape source, it's the complete recording of the 4 tape sources, and it's sound quality is very good. It sounds like it was taped from a slight distance from the stage, and has a decent balance of instruments, although the bass is heaviest in the mix. There is also quite a bit of tape hiss on the recording, and there are moments during the show where the sound becomes muffled from the taper either hiding the equipment, or from fiddling with the equipment. The source that we've added on as "bonus material" or a "bonus track" is what I've always known known to be the 2nd tape source, it's the most incomplete recording of the 4 (all the taper captured was "How Many More Times"), but I personally find it to be the most superior sounding recording of the 4, and if this source was complete, I think it would be considered to be the best version of the show. The 2nd source sounds like it was taped much closer to the stage, and has a much fuller, more dynamic sound to it. We just wanted to include it on to the project as "a little something extra" for collectors, we were thinking about the collectors who might be trying to track down some of the harder to find tape sources of this show.
