Notes: TWO shows, 7:30PM and 10:30PM, with Springsteen & The E Street Band headlining and ORLEANS opening. Held in the sold-out, 750-seat Gaston Hall. Critic Jerry Gilbert attended both shows and wrote a lengthy, highly detailed review of the night’s events that appeared a couple of weeks later in Sounds Magazine. The above-mentioned 9-song setlist for the first show is likely missing only one song title. This first (early) show included all 7 of the songs from the WIESS album – the only known time that’s happened, although it probably had happened before due to the amount of undocumented setlists from this era. There is no known audio of the early show.

Wild Billy's Circus Story 2. New York City Serenade 3. Spirit in the Night 4. The E Street Shuffle 5. Walking the Dog Disc 2: 1. Fourth of July, Asbury Park (Sandy) 2. It's Hard to Be a Saint in the City 3. Kitty's Back 4. For You 5. Rosalita (Come Out Tonight) "A wonderful, essential-to-have, early period show." --Brucebase Notes: This concert features a unique, short-lived and spectacular version of the E Street Band: Bruce Springsteen - vocals, all guitars, harmonica, piano on "For You" Garry Tallent - bass, tuba Danny Federici - organ, accordian Clarence Clemons - sax David Sancious - piano Ernest "Boom" Carter - drums This is the version of the E Street Band that recorded Springsteen's anthem, "Born to Run," in 1974. The 'Born to Run' album features a different line-up in which David Sancious was replaced by Roy Bittan and Ernest Carter was replaced by Max Weinberg. Steve Van Zandt would not become an official member until the Born to Run tour and Patti Scailfa and Nils Lofgren did not join until the Born in the USA tour, ten years later. Wild Billy's Circus Story starts the show in a stripped down arrangement reminiscent of Springteen's '73 in-studio radio performances. The version of New York City Serenade is, in my opinion, the single greatest live rendition of the song ever captured on tape. For You is presented in a breath-taking solo piano rendition. ESSENTIAL LISTENING for fans of early Springsteen. Enjoy, Graveyard_Boots
