Notes: Historic, if gruesome show. This is the free concert at the end of the Stone's 1969 American Fall tour where 300,000 people came out to the Altamont Speedway when the Hells Angels, paid to be security by the Sones with $500 of beer, beat people with pool cues and stabbed 18-year-old Meredith Hunter to death when he pulled a gun to defend himself against a beating. ********************************************************************* FLAC Tags Via xACT 2.53 By OldNeumanntapr *********************************************************************

Notes: Tracks 1-4 are from a very rare radio broadcast. I have no information other than what I can determine from listening: a local radio station sent a guy to the concert with a hand-held tape recorder. He recorded parts of the concert and then the station broadcast them over the air, shortly afterwards. I assume it was a local station because the taper seems pretty familiar with the Hell's Angels. The tape recorder starts to run low on power during "Sympathy," causing speed fluctuations, and those two versions were the last songs broadcast. I did not include those two songs in accordance with Dime policies because they are available on the official movie release "Gimme Shelter." My source was a very low generation CDR. I made some improvements using Adobe Audition. Unlike modern radio, which is extremely compressed, this broadcast benefited from compression, as the opening introduction and announcer were too loud compared to the music. I did not use any noise reduction or EQ. I rate the quality of this recording as slightly better than the well known version used on numerous bootleg releases. Track 7 is the audio from a TV broadcast by KRON San Francisco 12/8/1969, two days after the concert. It tells the story of the events leading up to the concert, what happened there, and the immediate aftermath. It also includes excerpts of parts of the concert from a different audience recording, which is worse than either the one presented above or the well known version used on numerous bootleg releases. Someone previously edited out the commercials, and I edited out excerpts of the official release "Let's Get Together" by Jefferson Airplane, which was played during the broadcast. This track is not the greatest fidelity but it's listenable. Not a big deal since it's mainly talking. If you are familiar with the story of the concert, you may want to skip it. I made some adjustments using Adobe Audition; nothing too extreme. Presented in FLAC 1.2.1. No artwork, sorry. Rolling Stones Altamont Speedway 12/6/1969 Livermore, CA 01. introduction 02. Notes: Notes: JEMS is proud to be able to partner with and present some of the choice recordings in the D & D archives. Some of these recordings have been around for years, but none of the master tapes or safety copies in some cases have ever been digitized until now. Dave and Donn taped many shows in and around the Seattle area in the 70's and also were contemporaries of some of the JEMS members. This recording of the infamous Altamont concert predates most D&D masters, so while they may have recorded it, we can’t say so definitively. It does seem to be an alternate source to the commonly circulated audience recordings of the show and offers a different perspective on the event, including some uncomfortable moments of audience interaction as the trouble ensues in front of the stage. Despite a lot of audience chatter and microphone movement, this is a surprisingly clear capture of the performance, enhanced through the efforts the Captain. If nothing else, it should offer a fresh angle on a familiar and tragic show. BK for JEMS

Notes: AUD -> ? -> cassette -> PC (Audiophile 2496 sound card) -> slight EQ, editing, and pitch correction (Adobe Audition) -> CD Wave (track splitting, FLAC conversion) -> foobar2000 (tagging) It was apparently recorded by two guys working together. They are visible quite a bit in the "Gimme Shelter" movie; by Under My Thumb the tapers are in the very front. The tape recorder is visible on top of one of the big monitor speakers in several occasions; photos are included.
Anthony Dellacioppa (4/5) CDR / 2 B View
Notes: The sound is a bit rough on the first few songs but seems to get better. the taper must have been right up front of the stage, when the shit starts going down you can here the crowd yelling and the mic get muffled in the confusion. You really get the feel of being right in the middle of it all.

Notes: True blends of the 'master aud tape' and the recently circulated audience tape recorded for radio broadcast from Watchit/gottogo99 (thank you!). By true blend, I mean that the two sources were run simultaneously and mixed to a new track. Background: One of the most storied recordings in Rolling Stones history. Apart from the obvious crowd problems (MJ: "Well, there've been a few hang ups. But generally, ... you've been beautiful!"), this was a pretty strong performance. The audience taping of the entire show must be--given the very difficult conditions--one of the most heroic recordings ever made. Many versions of this recordings have circulated over the years, including the well-known bootleg "The Killer Festival, Altamont 1969" (VGP-113). What do we have here?: This version is true blend (or matrix) of as much of the show as is available from five different sources. Note that none of them had all the pieces. The idea was to get the best possible sound for each track, but retain all the crowd noise, reactions, etc. in the recording. The crowd was obviously an integral part of this event, I've kept all of that from all the sources. Converts to 2 audio discs (TRT 1:26:26)

Notes: A historic and fascinating show. Sound quality varies from song to song, especially in relation to crowd noise and disruption. Numerous cuts and edits between songs, many of which may even be from the master. It sounds like the taper was pretty close to both the stage and the violence. Includes first live performance of "Brown Sugar."
