Notes: (Late Show) Text File Notes: This is Tarantura's 2000 mix of Source 1 and Source 2 to form a (more) complete show. I believe the majority of the mix is in the first show of the two being uploaded from this day in 1970. After listening to the second, evening show as I was making my previous post before sunrise yesterday (it will be by the time I post this), which is CD's 3 & 4, I believe that show was one source only. Whatever the case, whatever the source, this is a great-to-excellent 4 CD set of both the afternoon and evening shows on September 19, 1970. And the majority of the sound on both shows is what I call excellent (8-to-9 out of 10). These are my personal ratings and they may not be the same to you. I tend to base my own ratings on more than just sound and I let how much I like or enjoy the show enter in. It's not very scientific (o helpful?), but it is what it is. LINEAGE: Tarantura 2000 silver CD's > WAV > me > TLH (for CDDA testing & to aligning sector boundaries/fix SBE's*) > Audacity (to embed metadata/song titles and info and encode as FLAC) > FLAC 6 > TLH (to recheck project was error free and to create and verify md5 & ffp files) > you * I received these CD's in the WAV format originally a number of years back. I believe the person sharing them wasn't sure exactly what to do or how to losslessly compress and encode them and they were likely ripped with a bad CD burning program causing the SBE's and just left in the ripped WAV format. I've had the WAV files on my PC for years. As I was preparing this upload, I finally did all of the things everyone should learn to do to keep the integrity of the music as pure as possible. Every track had sector boundary errors, but with the help of TLH, they easily were fixed. My initial burn of the WAV files was just to get a listen in on the shows. Needless to say, I had a lot of pops and clicks in what I listened to due to the SBE's. But still having the WAV files, I was able to fix the errors from their initial rip yesterday and not have to fix them after a second rip from my snap, crackle, and pop CD's. The version I'm uploading is error free and from the direct WAV files I was given from the initial silver CD's burn, but of course, they're all fixed now. For its time, and the technology used, it is a very good sounding tape. I was in the first 10 rows -- that is, from about the middle of "Immigrant Song." When that song started, I was in the 83rd row. A few technical details in the spirit of full disclosure: 1) When I made the cassette-to-reel transfer, I had the daft idea of trying to simulate the spatial effects I heard at the concert during some of Page's solos, and during the Page/Plant call and response sections. I know -- hey, I was 16, and this wasn't for general consumption. In the intervening years I had tried various times to restore the tape to mono, but those attempts always resulted in a dulling of the highs, and I was never able to find an EQ that I liked. When I transferred the open reel tape to my hard drive, circa 1999, I did what I could to mitigate the panning, or at least see to it that it wasn't as abrupt as it is on the original reel.

Notes: This is fan release /ZEP-MSG-01/2/ collectorsmusicreviews.com says: "Final Daze (no label ZEP-MSG-01/2) Madison Square Garden, New York, NY - September 19, 1970 late show The source for this evening show from Madison Square Garden on September 19, 1970 comes from an internet download first available in 2004 and features Led Zeppelin’s final performance of 1970. It is a very good clear audience recording with guitars and vocals up front in the mix with the bass and drums slightly on the muffled side. The early show from this day has been around for ages and was first documented on Maui Wowie from Missing Link (with the incorrect date) and later as American Woman on TDOLZ. Praying Silently For Jimi on Empress Valley and Have You Ever Experienced? on Tarantura 2000 were released in 2004 also containing this early show. Empress Valley and Tarantura 2000’s titles are references to Jimi Hendrix who died the day before and Plant makes mention of this during both shows. The late show was a very important find considering it was previously undocumented and saw three quick releases to silver disc after being uploaded to the web. Shout That Loud on Electric Magic I believe was the first and followed by Requiem on Empress Valley and Final Daze. Have You Ever Experienced? from Tarantura 2000 followed shortly thereafter and includes both this and the early show. All but Tarantura were critized for running slightly fast but the speed is off by such a small amount (about 2% or so) that it isn’t really an issue. As for the performance, every Led Zeppelin show is certainly a unique experience and this one is no exception. A hot performance from the band may be due to the fact they had already loosened up from the afternoon set and tonight includes some rarities not performed in the early show. The extended “Whole Lotta Love” starts with Jeff Beck’s “Rice Pudding” riff and the medley contains more song references than you can shake a stick at. Not only do you get the usual “Boogie Chillin” and “Bottle Up And Go” but a nice surprise with “Train Kept A Rollin” among others. “Out On The Tiles” is the first encore and is joined nonstop with “Communication Breakdown” which also includes the first live references to “Gallows Pole”. Zeppelin plays a medley of “The Girl Can’t Help It” and “Twenty Flight Rock” and “How Many More Times” contains another version of “Blueberry Hill”, frequently played around this time. Most of these titles differ only slightly in sound quality and all sound very good. So unless you are particular it probably won’t matter much which version you end up with. Bottom line, this recording is an essential part of any Zep collection. Packaged in a double slimline jewel case, Final Daze is a good inexpensive way to obtain this great show and shouldn’t be too hard to track down." Lineage: CDRs > ? > FLAC > tracker > HD > Audacity lossless test > Dime Sound quality IMO 7-8/10 /but i think it's running too fast/

Notes: Awesome show, and a very listenable audience recording. The sound is a little muddy, but still a great listen. There is some kind of panning effect used on Jimmy's guitar during a few of the songs, which is cool on some, but distracting on others.

Notes: What we've done to make this remaster/project: - We've brought the volume down slightly, the raw recording was running a little too hot, creating some slight distortion/peaking, so we've tried to reduce that in the remaster. - We've tried to balance the instruments as best we could. Originally, the vocals and bass were coming in stronger than the other instruments, we've tried to create more of a balanced sound to the recording. - We've tried to bring out things that were buried in the raw recording, (comments, clapping, cheering, etc). After we cleaned up the recording, we discovered a very funny conversation that happens during "Bring It On Home" where either the taper (or someone near the taper) asks a woman in the audience "would you mind if you could sit down", and she replies "yes I would mind", and there's a moment of heated discussion. - We've tried to bring out more of the ambiance of the recording, to try and give listeners a sense of the venue, and what the taper experienced. - We've tried to reduce as much tape hiss as possible.

When I transferred the open reel tape to my hard drive, circa 1999, I did what I could to mitigate the panning, or at least see to it that it wasn't as abrupt as it is on the original reel. What you're hearing, believe me, is an improvement. 2) I also made two edits for the sake of flow. The first is during the guitar solo in Heartbreaker. In 1972, some moron at a party erased a few seconds of the solo. I joined what was left. Similarly, there was a cassette side change during the drum solo in Moby Dick. This is a fantastic show, with some killer performances, including a SIBLY that, to me, has something that no soundboard has been able to capture. Enjoy! Presence writes: As Darth9neo stated, earlier this year we discussed doing a new transfer of his open reel source. While that did not come to pass, we subsequently learned that the discs used for the initial release were at least two CD generations away from the shelf masters and that during these generations is when the index boundary errors and other clicks were introduced. While I managed to do a pretty good job cleaning those up for my initial "Presence version" it was difficult to do and left several repair artifacts that could just not be cleaned up. After that release Eddie Edwards pointed out that the pitch needed correction, thus "Born To Please" came about. The shelf master discs are largely free and clear from the clicks and pops found before. There were about three sector boundary errors, but these were generated by splitting tracks in SoundForge and thus are easily restored. For this release I also used parametric equalizing to lower the 250Hz frequency, the hollow reverb of the auditorium, ever so slightly, just enough to allow the other instruments to come through. I then applied a pitch correction of +1.5%, but not to the entire source. Some sections of the tape were at the correct pitch, but most was not. I also cleaned up the source a bit by trying to remove some of the crackle. All in all, it turned out very nice and I hope everyone enjoys it as it is arguably one of the best shows Led Zeppelin ever turned out.
