CommentSimon Moulds notes: The date/venue is doubtful as:
1 - the Fillmore West didn't open until late '68. (although there was a Fillmore Auditorium in 1967; the similar names cause confusion)
2 - The original Fillmore doesn't list QMS as playing on this date (see the Fillmore Last Days booklet for every show played at the Fillmore & Fillmore West, also the Artrock book shows the poster for this date with no mention of QMS).

If the date is correct, then the venue is likely to be elsewhere. If the venue is correct, then the date is wrong. I'm not complaining, it's a nice recording but I AM curious to know when and where it's really from. Any ideas?

Steve Keyser's list show this date as being at Fillmore West but only a 45 minutes recording. It therefore seems unlikely that this show took place at the Fillmore West.

Update: It's now confirmed, that this is a bogus date. By reference to Wolfgang's Vault it's now clear that the first set took place on 09/04/66 and the second on 11/20/66 both at the Fillmore Auditorium

It's really quite extraordinary that these forgotten tapes were found. In the early 90's this goldmine was a fact. One had discovered recordings by the band HP Lovecraft in concert at the Fillmore. And the concert was played when HPL was at their ABSOLUTE strongest. And certainly this is evident from these 8 tracks. Good sound too, Keep in mind that it was some 30 years ago...
Opens with "Wayfaring Stranger" (10:23). Again we have the hippie free form psych and now in a LONG groovy jam. Then "The Drifter" hardens the sound into this Garage/Psych live classic - 8:24 cool Psych/Rock/Jam. "Its about time" should be a tough choice to be played live with all its subtle passages and tempo breaks. But everything works just great. And the three-part vocal harmonies flows really fine. Performed next: "The White Ship". What a good performance. The haunting, moody Sound is well created on stage. Michaels Baroque-inspired harpsichord passages stand out. Really subtle here.
5th song: "At the Mountains of madness". Again very well performed, not too off track copied from the album but some very fine instrumental and improvisional moments too. This should have been an experience to have seen/heard. "The Bag I'm In" and "Country Boy and Bleeker street" freight trains all the way into a fine energetic Psych/Rock/jam. Included also is "I've Been Wrong Before" again making a fine contrast to the more fast and rockier songs.
My advice? Get this, its a fantastic live testament of a great band.
And as already mentioned, the sound is very Good. And the name? Well, it springs from the American Horror/Fiction-writer Howard Phillips Lovecraft(1890-1937). Songs like "At the Mountains of Madness", "The White Ship" and "Keeper of the Keys" shows references to some of Lovecraft's short-stories.

CommentFrom Siege's 1969 page:
Details: This is the most puzzling recording I have. Although it's supposedly from the August 13th, 1968 Fillmore West show, I don't believe there's any way that date is correct. However, I truly have no clue where it comes from and dating it has been impossible, especially since no stage dialogue is left. The overall sound of the performance is reminiscent of the first U.S. tour from 1969 and it sounds like they're playing to an American audience, despite the fact that no other versions of 'A Quick One' or 'My Generation' are known from that tour; the absence of Tommy material would also be hard to explain, unless the taper chose not to record any of it. It's doubtful the recording is from the second 1968 U.S. tour, given Townshend's more adventurous lead work in 'Heaven and Hell' and the stretched-out 'Magic Bus' intro. So I'm sticking it here. Anyway, it's a very strong performance, with Townshend playing some great lead in 'Heaven and Hell' to start off the show and then an inadvertent third repeat of the chorus in 'I Can't Explain'. But the most notable and surprising aspect of this one is the very strange reading of 'My Generation'—at the climax of a short jam, Townshend tunes the low string down, then slowly up again before going directly into the main theme of 'Shakin' All Over' without the usual intro. A long guitar lead-in to 'Magic Bus' seems to give at least a small clue as to the time period of this show, but it cuts after less than four minutes. I'm very curious to know the real story on this recording, if anyone knows it.

CommentThe famous "Reunion Show" of Janis and Big Brother.

NOTES from SEEDER:
A VG+ audience recording. On many places, the right channel was badly damaged, so I fixed it. There's a slight change in the sound when the fixing begins but that's all. I also had to remove a lot of gaps and glitches from Disc 2. Other than these fixes, the original recording has been left untouched.

The last two songs are from another audience source. Unfortunately, it's of lesser quality, VG at best.

Super Sonic SS 201056 purports to include an excerpt of this concert, but it's actually the April 9 show.

The Davis Sextet opened for the Grateful Dead and Stone the Crows for four nights at the Fillmore West, April 9-12. Complete tapes of all four shows are in wide circulation.

In addition to the Fillmore West shows, the Sextet played the fourth annual University of California Jazz Festival at the Berkeley Greek Theater (April 24), and the Both/And Club, San Francisco (April 28). After this Davis returned to New York for another period of intense studio activity -- five dates in the period from May 17-June 4.

"From: David Hollister
Subject: A show to be heard

Interesting info that makes this show so cool:

During the little drumming interlude prior to the Other One, there is some woman
you can hear ranting and raving and generally going on about Viet Nam. It would
seem the band kind of lets her state her piece in its entirety before going into
the Other One. Very cool.

The whole second CD is very cool. The jam after the Cryptical reprise is
great. It goes into a kind of lulling drum beat which goes on for a few minutes
(what I called Drums again, even though it isn't in the official setlist) before
Phil takes it up and you hear the definite Main Ten bass line. A great Main Ten
jam that goes on for about 4 1/2 minutes or so before Bobby takes it into Sugar
Magnolia.

First version of Sugar Magnolia. Very cool :) No, it doesn't rock, but up
until now, the earliest version I'd ever heard was the one from the famed
6/24/70 Cap Theater show, which I thought was unusual enough to be of historical
significance. This one is also interesting historically.

Between Top of the World and Casey Jones the band sits around talking to the
crowd and deciding what to play next. What kills me is Bobby's comment: "Hey,
there's a guy over there, he's always over there and he always yells out 'Golden
Road!'. I wanna know who he is, because man, you really take the cake. To tell
you the truth we've forgotten how to play that song" or something like that.
You can also hear several suggestions for songs, among them "White Rabbit",
which cracks up the crowd.

Great stuff. Let's get it out there. The acoustic set is pretty
straight-forward, but it's the electric set I think that really shines. The
boys just seems to be having a great time the whole show."

CommentElton John with Dee Murray, Nigel Olsson
November 1970 (possibly Nov. 12, 1970)

On November 12, 1970, Elton John begins a 4 night stand opening for The Kinks. The bill also includes jazz-rock band Ballin' Jack and Juicy Lucy.

Based on known setlists (above) and the fact that Wolfgang?s Vault is now broadcasting a ?Honky Tonk Women? from Nov. 12, I?m willing to bet that the 12th is the correct date for this show. (If anyone has a copy to compare this version to, please be my guest.)

Elton had only made his US debut a couple of months earlier on Aug. 25th at the Troubadour where he played 6 nights in a row before returning to the UK (presumably) to record Tumbleweed Connection which was released on Oct. 30. Next the band performed 5 East Coast concerts in Boston, Philly and Baltimore before heading out west for 1 show in San Bernadino, CA. and the 4 Fillmore shows. 2 days after the last Fillmore show, Elton and the band were in NYC at A&R Studios for the in-studio radio concert which produced the classic live album ?11-17-70" (or as it was known everywhere else, ?17-11-70"!).

This performance, only 5 days earlier, is very similar in feel and performance to that album.

Often misdated as 11/27/70

Immediately before Wall of Sleep, someone (Bill Graham, most likely) says "for the second time around, Black Sabbath" and Ozzy says "We'd like to start off with . . . Behind The Wall of Sleep." This either reflects a set break or the end of an early show and the beginning of the late show.

CommentLine-up (unconfirmed):
Arthur Lee - electric guitar, lead vocals
Frank Fayad - electric bass
George Suranovich - drums
Gary Rowles(?) - electric guitar
Craig Tarwater(?) - electric guitar. (Or, one of the guitarists may be Jay Donnellan or John Sterling)
The notes in the Sundazed “Love Lost & Found” CD seem to be sorta questionable. It would seem that Suranovich played the Fillmore West, then dropped out before the Fillmore East gigs, replaced by Don Poncher).

CommentDate remains a mystery... this show may been one of the 5/27-30/1971 shows at the Fillmore with Cold Blood or the 12/3/1971 show at the Winterland with Tower of Power. Originally seeded as a March 1971 show.

Joy of Cooking is:
Toni Brown (keyboards/guitar/vocals)
Fritz Kasten (drums)
Ron Wilson (percussion)
David Garthwaite (bass)
Terry Garthwaite (guitar/vocals)

This recording comes from KSAN... Exact date remains unknown. Lou Sosa notes: "According to the Bill Graham Productions database, Joy of Cooking played with Cold Blood on May 27th-May 30th, 1971 at the Fillmore West. This could be from one of these sets.

Looks like they also played with Hot Tuna & Tower of Power on December 3rd & 4th , 1971 at Winterland. I'm also wondering if it could be from there and someone maybe got 12-03-1971 confused with 03-12-1971, and thus the March 1971 date?"

It's About That Time*
Commenthi all,
much to everyone's dismay, upon close comparison, the santana fillmore west 7/4/71 closing turns out to be a mix of shows. a portion is from the closing show and a lot of it is filled in from a
winterland 69 fm show that circulated for a long time. santana was the only band that week in 71 that would not allow their set to be aired live. 2 songs were later released on the live lp and about another 30 min was broadcast in pieces later. they had no problem with the closing jam being aired since none of their material was performed. upon close listening, the mix and quality changes sometimes from song to song and the 2nd guitar of neal schon is only present on the real 71 tracks.some of the songs included on this set were
actually dropped from the set list by this time. compare to other 71 shows and you'll see what i mean. also, mother's daughter isn't really on this cd copy going around. i'm sure this will start some debate. this kind of thing always does.
