12/02/83 , Harris-Millis Cafeteria - University of Vermont, Burlington  Source Detail  1  flac  [1] phish debut. trey, mike, fish, and jeff holdsworth recall being billed as “blackwood convention†for this show (though no one is certain what band name was used), which is believed to be their first public gig together. the band was short on equipment, so a hockey stick was used as a microphone stand. between sets, the dj spun some michael jackson and trey drummed along to the album. the house music (which included more michael jackson) was presumably turned up after fire to drown out the band. the setlist may be incomplete, though, as the master recording contains nothing after trey’s sarcastic comments about michael jackson following fire. all songs were, of course, phish debuts. back in black was teased before scarlet begonias. while this show is often billed as an rotc halloween dance that took place on october 30, 1983, this is incorrect. the master copy of the recording of this show, as unearthed by phish archivist kevin shapiro, contains a handwritten note that pegs the date as december 2, 1983. in discussions with kevin, band members confirmed that they recall rehearsing for this show over the thanksgiving break, and that the show was a christmas semi-formal. also, it was not an rotc-sponsored event; it was a dorm dance in a predominantly rotc dorm (mike’s dorm at the time).

11/03/84 , Slade Hall, UVM, Burlington  Source Detail  1  shn  [1] first known phish performance. [2] first known performance [3] first known phish performance; jeff on vocals. [4] marc daubert on percussion. the setlist for this show might be incomplete, as the recordings that circulate cut during drums. marc daubert made a guest appearance on percussion. this show featured the first known performance of camel walk and the first known phish performances of wild child, bertha, can't you hear me knocking, eyes of the world, and whipping post (which featured jeff on vocals). cyhmk included a st. stephen tease. copies of this performance often circulate with the incorrect date of november 3, 1983. also, it is possible that this show was actually on friday, november 2, 1984, as a photo of a flyer for a show on “11/2†was printed in the phish book.

12/01/84 , Nectar's, Burlington  Source Detail  1  shn  [1] first known phish performance. [2] first known performance. [3] first known phish performance; missing final lyrics. [4] marc daubert. [5] first known phish performance; dude of life on vocals. [6] first known performance; dude of life on vocals. skippy and fluffhead featured the dude of life on vocals. the jam after camel walk may have been back porch boogie blues. spanish flea included an introduction of the band members. don’t want you no more was not performed in its entirety, as it lacked the final lyrics. the lengthy percussion jam featured a guest appearance from marc daubert. mike recalls that there were approximately 200 people in the audience. this gig featured the first known version of slave to the traffic light and fluffhead, the first known phish versions of fire, don't want you no more, cities, and skippy the wondermouse, and the only known phish version of spanish flea. this performance was on the upstairs level of nectar's.

03/04/85 , Hunt's, Burlington  Source Detail  1  shn  [1] first known version. [2] first known phish version; bobby hackney and jah roy on vocals. [3] with mcgrupp lyrics. http://phish.net/setlists/phish-march-04-1985-hunts-burlington-vt-usa.html this show was an african relief benefit for oxfam. fire up the ganja (which is the song fire on the mountain with different lyrics) featured bobby hackney and jah roy of the band lambsbread on vocals. this setlist is incomplete and featured the first known version of anarchy and first known phish version of fire up the ganja. this is the first known version of skippy to have mcgrupp lyrics. (this song was called skippy by the band at this time, even though it eventually became mcgrupp.) http://phish.com/tours/dates/mon-1985-03-04-hunts this was phish’s 13th show, an african relief benefit for oxfam dance party that was connected to a wruv-fm valentine’s day radiothon with a fund-raising goal of $13,993.00. local reggae band lambsbread was supposed to play too but they canceled so members of lambsbread performed with phish. this show featured the 1st public performance of anarchy, which is an extremely short punk rock spoof. fire on the mountain was performed with bobby hackney and jah roy from lambsbread, who sung the lyrics “fire up the ganjaâ€. in mike’s words, jah roy was the other singer from lambsbread (in addition to bobby) with huge dreadlocks who did the authentic jamaican dub style. while the band still referred to the song as skippy the wondermouse, this version of skippy was the 1st to contain the narrated lyrics to mcgrupp and the watchful hosemasters, which tom had recently sent to trey. tapes of this performance, sometimes combined with parts of 5/3/85, were often mislabeled 4/19/85 or 5/19/85.

[4] first known phish performance. this show was performed at the last day party on uvm’s redstone campus. it marked page’s debut with the band, as he sat in during portions of the third set. in fact, big leg emma was preceded by an announcement from trey that “our friend page, from goddard, will sit in later.†bring it on home featured bobby brown on harmonica and whipping post featured jeff on vocals. mcgrupp was dedicated to fish. makisupa featured a reggae jam. this show featured the only known phish performances of bring it on home and the other one.

10/30/85 , Hunt's, Burlington  Source Detail  1  shn  [1] first known version. [2] first known public version. [3] lyric referenced pumpkin pie. this show contained the first known version of harry hood and the first known public version of dog log. trey remarked during the intro to hood that "this one is a story of the man who lives directly across the street from us right now." (the house on king street where trey, fish, and brian long lived was across the street from the hood factory.) slave was dedicated to “brickle.†trey’s humorous comments about being “back on planet earth†were in reference to the events at goddard on october 26. alumni had a reference to pumpkin pie. this setlist is likely incomplete. this show was part of new music night at hunt’s. oblique wave also played. this show featured the 1st known performances of harry hood. during the introduction of the band that preceded harry hood, trey said “we hope you’re ready to danceâ€. he explained that this was the story of the man who lives across the street, harry hood. it is the story of him going to the beaches of greece, which he explained came about when his friend brian put a carton of hood milk in the refrigerator and said harry…harry…â€. as the song ended, somebody (maybe fish) said that they’re going to get hood to sponsor them someday. during possum, fish made some reference to the television show “bj and the bearâ€. before slave to the traffic light, trey thanked anybody who was at goddard last week and dedicated the song to a friend of his named brickle (?). while the band was tuning before i wish, trey announced they were going to play a dance song – a stevie wonder cover. fish quipped that “hippies have a right to dance too.†this was the 1st and only known revival (dickie betts cover) played by phish. before prep school hippie, someone (likely fish) said they called themselves phish for no good reason. he asked the crowd to give them “a good reason to call themselves phishâ€.

11/14/85 , Memorial Auditorium Basement, Burlington    1  shn  [1] acoustic. possible female vocalist accompaniment. [2] first known phish version; acoustic. [3] acoustic. [4] possible guest appearance by marc daubert, at least one member of the joneses, and possibly others. [5] first known version; acoustic. this show was an acoustic benefit that also featured performances by the joneses and the visions. fish played percussion instead of a drumkit. slave appeared to have a female vocalist accompanying trey. this show also featured the first known version of dear mrs. reagan and the first known phish versions of hurricane and piggies. makisupa included additional impromptu verses regarding mike, fish and their "new friend, page." piggies was dedicated to harry mitiguy, then president of the howard bank (referred to by trey as "howard mitiguy"). the drum jam out of makisupa may have included marc daubert, at least one member of the joneses, and possibly others. phish's archivist, kevin shapiro, played the makisupa > piggies -> makisupa portion of this show on from the archives on 10/30/09 at festival 8. the date of this show may be 11/19/85.

11/23/85 , Goddard College, Plainfield  Source Detail  1  shn  [1] first known phish performance. this list for set ii is likely incomplete, as the only recording that circulates fades in and out at points. the “whipping post jam†fades in after mike’s song on the recording that circulates. this “jam†contained jams reminiscent of the grateful dead’s the other one and dark star. it also featured norwegian wood teases from mike, and a jam reminiscent of the early intro to harry hood. antelope fades in after the “whipping post jam†fades out. the complete lists for sets i (featuring the first known phish performance of wild thing) and ii are not known, although mike has referenced the first set wild thing in interviews and in the phish book.

02/20/88 , ATO Fraternity House, St. Lawrence Univ., Canton  Source Detail  1  shn  this show was an ato pledge party and previously circulated as september 27, 1987. trey teased who knows in fire and deg in whipping post. there was a third set to this show but copies do not circulate and no list is known. some copies of this show in circulation are incomplete and out of order. these copies are usually mislabeled as “pledge party, burlington, vt.†other copies circulate with the complete recording (except for bbfcfm) but have slave before bowie; this order is incorrect. good times bad times, slave to the traffic light, and big black furry creature from mars were shot from a video by (or for) mike. it is unclear whether bbfcfm closed the set or was the encore because a recording of it does not circulate. setlist incomplete. a third set was played. notes from scott judd, a member of the ato fraternity house where this show was performed: this performance has circulated dated 09/27/87. charlie dirksen from phish.net suggested that various musical elements of this show, along with the presence of a few videos in the band's archive, almost certainly dated this show to feb 20, 1988. with this information, along with input from several friends who were also in attendance, we concluded with a high degree of certainty that 2/20/88 is the correct date, replacing the originally listed date of 9/27/87. the presence of phase dance (pat metheny) was a key distinguishing factor in correcting the date, as this song was only performed by phish four times, all in feb. 1988. charlie also noted that this particular arrangement of fluffhead is consistent with the revised date, and would not have been consistent with sept. '87 renditions. given the corrected date of 2/20/88, prior notes about this tape containing the first ever version of i didn't know have been removed. charlie dirksen tells me the band's archive contains as-yet-unseen video of good times bad times, slave to the traffic light, and bbfcm from this show, presumably shot with mike gordon's personal video camera. bbfcm does not appear on any circulating recordings, but is vaguely recollected to have come from a short third set on this date. this was one of phish's first shows outside of vermont. our fraternity (ato), having completely exhausted the limited stock of quality area bands at prior events, hired phish with no prior knowledge of their music, not even so much as a demo, based on a recommendation from a friend-of-a-friend in burlington, vt. i had the good fortune of assisting the band with load-in and setup, which resulted in a private performance of golgi aparatus during soundcheck. needless to say i was mightily impressed, and spent much of my evening spreading the word to friends about the upcoming show.
